Plants as Presents
Plants are thoughtful and authentic presents. Whether you need small, but meaningful, gifts for your co-workers, or want to give your family a memorial to a loved one that will last for decades, Tohono Chul Park has what you’re looking for.
Crown of Thorns – Exotic but Easy to Care For
Euphorbia milii
Perfect for someone with *ahem* limited luck with plants: place it in a sunny indoor spot, water it occasionally and it will bloom nearly year-round. Cheerful, yet exotic looking, the Crown of Thorns has sprightly red-pink flowers and, hidden under abundant leaves, its titular thorns.
Chiltepin – Hearty, Pretty and Great for Cooks
Capsicum annuum
This plant is hot. Literally. But also, it can withstand the cold, down to about 17 degrees F. Its bright red chilies are abundant and beautiful for many months of the year. The perfect present for your favorite cook. They’ll be able to enjoy a beautiful low-maintenance shrub, and then, when a dish calls for a little spice, pluck one of its fiery fruits.
Agaves - Tough and Elegant: The Manly Plant
Agave Sp.
Everything about these succulents says tough and robust: from their ability to withstand extremes of temperature, to the drink that’s made from them. The perfect gift for fathers, sons, husbands and grandsons, these plants are easy to care for, long-lived and possessed of a rugged elegance.
Penstemons – Given once, it will give again and again.
Penstemon Sp.
A kaleidoscopic variety of flower colors are available at the Park: from nearly white to stunning magenta. Give a bushel to your favorite gardener and watch their delight then, and again in the spring, when they have a yard full of wildflowers that with a little help, will bloom year after year.
Bishop’s Cap Cactus – Weird (in a good way) & Stylish
Astrophytum myriostigma
With their sleek, steely-green, curious pentagonal configuration, and wild yellow flowers, Bishop’s Cap Cacti are an intriguing blend of style and weirdness: in other words, the perfect present for the young hipster, artist, fashionista, or creative professional in your life.
