PARK AFTER DARK

Friday, October 21, 5:00 – 8:00pm

Join us this fall as we celebrate the Day of the Dead and the Sonoran Desert after dark. This year’s exhibit is Día de los Muertos, a look at the art inspired by the customs of this distinctive family-centered borderlands tradition. Meet the artists from Día de los Muertos and Art Journaling, chat with local wildlife experts and make a connection with their nocturnal creatures such as bats, bugs, snakes and owls. There will be performances for the young and the young-at-heart including the fiesta sounds of the Luz de Luna mariachis. Kitty Williams, author of “Day of the Dead” will be signing copies of her book in the La Galeria Museum Shop starting at 5:30. Before the evening is over, take time for light picnic supper catered by the Tea Room (fee) or simply enjoy the desert night! Free for children 12 and under / members $5 / general public $8

In 2010 we invited families and friends to join us in celebrating our distinctive Sonoran Desert after dark, which was all about our exhibit Night Moves: Images After Dark and what happens on the grounds once the sun goes down. It may have been coyotes traveling through, lightning streaking the dark monsoon sky, hawk moths searching out night-blooming flowers, or the celestial bodies beloved of astronomers. Visitors chatted with local wildlife experts and made connections with bats, bobcats, bugs, snakes and owls.
