Visions of the Land: Artists Inspired by the Southwest Landscape
November 2, 2006 – January 7, 2007

The rugged mountains, endless skies, jutting buttes, distant valleys and craggy canyons of the region are part of the unique character of the Southwest.  Visions of the Land features a range of styles and different approaches by Southwest artists. Recognizable scenic vistas of actual places and imaginary creations inspired by the landforms are translated into dramatic paintings, pastels, and works in mixed media, fiber and clay. Through artist’s eyes we glimpse the grandeur, carefully studied details, and changing conditions of light and weather that shape our appreciation of the Southwest environment.

Fiber artist Barbara Jakucki says, “There is something magical and mystical about Arizona landscapes.  I find serenity and inspiration in many of my favorite vistas across the state whether I am gazing across the vast expanse of the Grand Canyon, driving through the desert near Four Peaks , hiking through the Mogollon Rim, or exploring the mountain trail of the San Francisco Peaks .  Using some of my favorite techniques of dye painting fiber, appliqué and beading, I have created a quilted memory book to highlight each magical mountain.”
