2006 Recap
After weeks of anticipation, the word came at 4:40pm on June 13, 2006 that "tonight is the night"! Queen of the Night certainly "played coy" this year! We got out the word, thanks to emails, faxes and the help of all our local media. Tohono Chul Park certainly appreciated this help.
As the sun began to set, they came to the Park -- in families, with cameras, grandchildren in tow, residents and tourists. Some brought flashlights; all were eager to see the Queen make her appearance. And she did! The Night-blooming Cereus(peniocereus greggii) looks like a dead stick most of the year, but on June 13, 2006, it put out beautiful, waxy, white blossoms all across the Park.
Tohono Chul Park has the largest public collection in the world of these plants. Bloom night visitors have the rare opportunity to see these mystical flowers, and smell their wonderful aroma that attracts the Sphinx moths that pollinate them.
Thanks again to our local media who helped thousands learn of the event. Thanks also to Park staff and volunteers who quickly began the process of lighting the paths and preparing for our visitors. Over 1100 people came to be part of this wonderful, free desert event -- Remember everyone: Get on our email list to be part of the magic next year!
