“And this is art—man responding to this LOOKING by getting NEW IDEAS, seeing his needs, seeing his world, and saying, ‘What if…’ ‘What if I design a better car…or a new kind of plane?’ ‘What if I paint a picture, write a song?’ Animals build by instinct; you will never see a new style sparrow’s nest. Man does it the hard way—learning, looking, thinking, questioning, and coming up with an Apollo spacecraft or a unique building or a symphony…”
Jean Mary Mormon, author: Art: Of Wonder and A World
Every summer Tohono Chul’s galleries feature exhibits of artwork created by local students. The works demonstrate the value of art education where students are given another avenue for expressing their thoughts and ideas. In an era where we are bombarded by visual images from the mass media, students can learn to decipher the symbols and visual messages, examine the objects and events of their daily lives and those of other cultures, and to unravel the meaning and significance of the world around them. From the study of ancient Egypt to the French Impressionists, they can learn about universal concepts throughout time and across cultures. They also can experiment by using different materials and processes in creating their own perspectives.
Our exhibit salutes the students’ visions and fresh perspectives and encourages them in their “learning, looking, thinking, questioning, and coming up” with creative ideas and solutions.
